Well, today was interesting. Come July I will be on national television. How much time I'll be on is suspect, I expect no more than five minutes or so, but here is the story.
A bit of set up for those who do not understand my profession. My title is instructor but I am part historian, part actor, part educator, part deck commander, part cook, part rigger, part sailor etc. etc. I am a member of an informal learning center called the Ocean Institute that does an immersion program for fourth and fifth grades. We show them what it was like to work in the maritime trade of the Regency Era, mostly based off of Richard Henry Dana Jr.'s book Two Years Before the Mast. The maritime programs of the Ocean Institute, as you probably do not know, were the inspiration for a very popular television show.
This morning I go in for work and it turns out I'm a half hour early. Which puts me in prime candidacy to work a special project. A film crew is on location filming an hour long documentary on the "Origin of SpongeBob" (working title.) As I stated above the singing of sea chanties aboard and the muster of the program was the inspiration of the title song. A number of other elements of the Ocean Institute influenced the show with the sponge himself and Patrick the sea star included.
The documentary wanted to include a Maritime instructor leading a group of kids in a sea chanty just like Steve (the creator of the show) would have done in the good old days. That Maritime instructor just so happened to be me. I, on camera and in full costume, led the kids in a round of John Kanaka. Then, to my dismay, I led them in the song we all know and love. The release date is July and it will run on Nickelodeon. Look out for that one.
Are you ready kids? I can't hear you. Ooooooooo...sigh.
