Title: Gaviotas: a Village to Reinvent the World Author: Alan Weisman Year Published: 1998 Publisher: Chelsea Green Publishing Company
Plot Summary: In 1971, on the Colombian barren, rain leached savanna, a group of many people sharing the same vision started something amazing - If life could survive on the merciless desert, it could survive anywhere. Armed with knowledge on green technology, medicine, agriculture and a thirst to make a difference, they set out to make the worlds first eco friendly self sustainable village. Read through their journey as they revitalise centuries forgotten rainforest, make a trade and independant income from a plantation that was just for shade, make, adapt and remake actual wind powered electic turbines, solar energy collectors that work in the rain, water pumps that children can operate and fix.
Why I recommend the book: It was a rollercoaster. From the humble beginning to the rise, fall and rise again of these amazing visionaries that believed there was a better way to live. It inspires me to be green, and get back to nature. And it inspires to think outside the box. I mean, these people, a community of 300 at it's biggest, have no police, no mayor, no council, no politicians - they don't need them! there's no crime and everyone works together if there's a problem. If i didn't hate the heat so much, i'd move there once I could afford it!
