Having read the first book in the series many years ago when my mum picked up a copy of it at my primary schools library sale, I was surprised to find that there were more books in the series! I discovered two of them in a second book store which sent me searching for the series (1&2 arrived from ebay yesterday!) and i'm still looking for 5&6, but here are the two that I have read.
Book 3
Title: A Bad Spell for the Worst Witch
Author: Jill Murphy
Year Published: 1982
Publisher: Kestral books/ Puffin Books
Plot Summary: Determined to lose her reputation as the Worst Witch at Cackle Academy, Mildred looks for every opportunity to be helpful. Which, as usual spells disaster, as she drenches her form mistress during a fire drill, and gets herself turned into a frog. But events take a turn as Mildred discovers the frog in the pond was a human too! Can Mildred get turned back into a human, and find a magician to turn her new friend back into human form too?
Why I recommend the book: I adored this one! It's hard to feel anything but sorry for Mildred as she tries (and often fails) to help. The story is fairly smooth and neatly ties the mini stories together.
Book 4
Title: The Worst Witch all at Sea
Author: Jill Murphy
Year Published: 1993
Publisher: Viking/Puffin Books
Plot Summary: Mr Rowan-Webb invites Mildred Hubble (and the rest of her year) to a holiday at his castle by the sea as a thank you for rescuing him from being a frog in the previous book. Mildred can't bear the thought of being parted from her faithful (but, like her, terrible at all things academic) cat, Tabby. So, in the early hours of the morning they're to leave, Mildred swaps her borrowed, standard issue black cat for Tabby, and sneaks him away with her. Little did she know that this would change her holiday, and give her a chance to save the day again!
Why I recommend the book: Love, love, love! I adored the first book as a child, and I still adore Mildreds misadventures! The imagery in this book in wonderful - Jill Murphy has a talent!
