Many people who visit and dine at public restaurants are confused by the empty plate that is found on most tables; the center piece and the tables set around this small dish. It is usually decorated with a trescle or some stylized face, and no food is served on it. In fact, it’s an offering dish. The majority of Uantiri hold a loosely Druidic belief structure, which includes leaving some of one’s meal for the gods or spirits as daily observance. The plates are put there out of tradition and because it’s easier to place one than to have nearly every table request one. Though people may look at you funny if you mix your olive oil and vinaigrette in it for dipping your bread, no one will be offended if you don’t use it.
