Your Excellency, On behalf of the Ergonian Governing Council I am visiting here in order to bring forth the matter of Ergonia, a nation which lies to the west of Uantir on the MCS map, diplomatically recognizing Uantir, and vice-versa, as well as the matter of opening diplomatic relations. Our internet website is located here: bastionunion.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=1093Signed, Thadeus Lange Jr Chair The Governing Council of The Independent Realm of Ergonia

Welcome to Uantir Thadeus.
I don't go on the Bastion Union forums, so tell me a bit ore about Erggonia, do you have a wiki or other site?

It answers some of them.
Uantir maintains an open and standing recognition of the sovereignty and validity of all nations with claims on Micras. Do you have any specific diplomatic goals?

Your Matchless Grace,
Our main specific diplomatic goal is building a friendship between two nations.
We thank you, Your Matchless Grace, for stating that Uantir maintains open recognition of the sovereignty and validity of all nations with claims on Micras.
Likewise, Ergonia would like to recognize Uantir officially. We would prefer to do this by a Treaty of Recognition and Friendship.
Your Matchless Grace, would Uantir be willing to sign a Treaty of Recognition and Friendship with Ergonia, provided, of course, that the treaty is fully acceptable to Uantir?
Regards,
Thadeus Lange Jr

Your Matchless Grace,
Below is a draft treaty of friendship and between our two nations:
If there is anything, Your Chivalrous Eminence, that you would like changed, let me know. If not, you may sign the treaty, and then we will like-wise do so.
Regards,
Thadeus Lange Jr

Uantir does not align itself under, nor has it signed itself to (officially or honorifically) the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
I am, however, going to assume that Ergonia uses the phrase "Diplomatic Immunity" in the modern sense as established by it. How does Ergonia define diplomatic immunity?

Your Matchless Grace,
Ergonia defines diplomatic immunity as giving the diplomatically-immune person protection from any lawsuit or prosecution under Ergonia's laws, although the person could still hypothetically be expelled from Ergonia.
If this is unacceptable, we can remove the language on diplomatic immunity if you would prefer.

Everyone is accountable for their actions. I expect a diplomat or ambassador to do enough research on Uantiri culture to avoid any major cultural friction that would result in litigation or incarceration. It is the expectation and the purpose of dignitaries to learn the customs and language and government of the country they are assigned to. Without that kind of assimilation and research, how can they represent themselves in a way the country they are working in can understand and relate to? I hold my emissaries to that standard as well.

Your Matchless Grace,
I have removed the language regarding diplomatic immunity from the treaty.
If the treaty is acceptable to Uantir, Uantir may approve it and you can sign it, Your Majesty, and we will likewise do so. Otherwise, Your Majesty, please let us know how we can further modify the treaty to suit your expectations.
Regards,
Thadeus Lange Jr

Your Matchless Grace,
I have noticed that there has not been a reply for a while. Is everything okay? If there is anything we can do on the Ergonian side, please let us know.

Thadeus Lange Jr

Work, school, family, and the flu, man. I haven't forgotten. But I do have more questions!
AFFIRMING that both nations formally recognize and respect each other as independent and sovereign nations, including the sovereign territories of each other: websites, message boards and other real or virtual property under direct or indirect control of their respective governments, as proclaimed by them and as long as respecting the sovereignty of each other under Intermicronational law and convention;
What do you mean 'as proclaimed by them' in this statement. Are you insinuating that an official declaration of all property and territory is required? That's a lot of book keeping that I don't really want to do.

Your Majesty,
No, of course not. We would never want to overburden Uantir's administration with frivolous requirements. If it pleases you, we have amended the draft to be more specific with what property we want to be respected:
Please let us know if this is acceptable. If it is not, then we will endeavor to adjust it to meet your satisfaction.
Signed,
Thadeus Lange Jr

That looks much more refined. I appreciate your ease of accomodation, I understand I'm particular and difficult to work with sometimes.
Understand, before we sign, that this is not a treaty of alliance, and nothing about it compels either nation to take political or military action in aid of or in aggression against another nation. I want to state for the record that Uantir considers this a very formal declaration of recognition and holds it as a valuable promise towards stronger and more committed coordination in the future. We are neighbors after all.
I do want to caution you, that neighbors or no, I don't like the Bastion Union. At its inception it felt like a cult, and it still strikes me as a cloying and anti-independent concept. I will not personally be visiting Ergonia's forums to conduct business, as I don't travel to Bastion territory. If, in the unlikely event that I ever do have another active aristocrat (one who doesn't share my prohibitions against the Bastion Union) who is also interested in being an ambassador, it will be that individual who makes a physical presence on the Ergonia boards.
Also understand that membership in the Bastion Union will always be a barrier to a complete and binding treaty of alliance between Uantir and Ergonia, as I cannot sign an agreement that compels Uantir to use public resources in the aid of a country belonging to an organization I hold in contempt.
As long as that's understood and acceptable, I'm ready to sign.
