It seems to be the time for it, as i'm not the only one about to embark on the often stressful hell of moving house.
Any tips, pointers, and tricks for getting it done fast, efficiently and without killing anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Good question; I'm in the process of moving right now. My strategy is to move one piece of furniture a day for two weeks until I'm moved in. I'm halfway through. Probably not everyone's favorite tactic, though.

We've got a move coming up as well. For us though, the government moves all our stuff for us. We have been proactive about getting our things sorted and boxed up early. The less clutter you have the easier it is to organize and move your stuff.
As for not killing anyone, well, try not to bump into each other while packing or cleaning or organizing. If you know there's tension between the two of you when both of you start working on something, don't work together: work parallel. As much as it seems like things would get done quicker if two people worked on the same room it only opens you up to conflict. I find it works best to have ownership over a zone of the project. Let one person work on the kitchen while you work on the dining room makes the affair less stressful and more productive.

Things must work differently over where you are, Gelare - we have to move everything in the space of 3-6 days.
I wish the government was shifting our stuff! (we have an awful lot of stuff) For the most of it, we're packing anything and everything that we don't need. Almost all the books are packed, half the movies are, all but two of the hanging pictures, half the cooking appliances, most of the tapestry/sewing/wool stuffs, and all the blankets - but the main problem is all the things we use often - wardrobes, dressers, clothes, etc.
As for killing people - I give people jobs to do, and then I find its not getting done, or they're taking ages and it's really frustrating.

See, I'm moving a grand total of about ten miles, and I'm not in a tremendous rush. Bigger moves than that sound a lot harder.

That's always the problem with relying on others. Unfortunately, unless you're willing to do everything yourself, we have to learn how to manage others. For instance, if they don't work as fast as you'd like than be proactive enough to issue projects earlier than you think they need to be and if they are not getting done at all find something that they will do or have them help in a different way, like taking over the cooking while you work.

It seems pretty much our whole nation is moving! Heh heh. I've been thinking about the whole clutter = difficult move thing lately, too. My room and my belongings are in a terrible mess and as I would like to move out of my parents' house (SHAME) in the next year or so, I should really get my junk cleaned up. And get a better job. Etc. Moving on... =P

Her Majesty raves about FlyLady when it comes to getting motivated to de-cluttering and cleaning up. I'll remind her to drop by and give more detailed information.

Wow. Day one was today for the actual shifting (after the stress of having to drive 30kms (1.6kms to a mile) to Mt Barker to deal with paperwork, and then the following day, drive 75kms to Murray FREAKING Bridge to finish the damned paperwork, and then to Mt Barker to pick up the keys...) And it went well... I nearly killed mum a few times over "Ask dad, no mum, put that down and ask dad!" "fine, I won't help!" and the study is looking very very empty! (I honestly cannot believe that that much stuff could be put in a little trailer and a ute....) Day two is tomorrow and I have a friend who has a truck license and is willing to give us her day, including getting and using a truck to move stuff.
I'm currently baking a cake. But it's a special cake. It's my infamous moving cake. Invented last year, spur of the moment kind of thing. It involves four eggs, four cups of flour, 3/4 cup of sugar, two tbsp's a honey, and 3 cups of water for the actual cake part - tweaking the ingrediants to taste. And then I trew in pine nuts, cashews, almonds, brazil nuts, pecans, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pepitas, peanuts, cacao nibs and about 15 different types of dried fruit, including mango and pineapple. It is the closest thing on this dimension that one could get to the elven Lembas bread. Last move, one small square substituted a meal, it's that nutrient dense. And it helped the people shifting all the stuff to keep up the energy without energy drinks or caffiene.
I'll try to update tomorrow.

Hmm...that sounds delicious. I'll see if I can convince Her Majesty to bake me some when we get our apartment to sustain my energy while we're unpacking.

I'm the lead web developer for SweatyQuid, a freelancer market place web site after I have grown tired of Fiverr shutting my accounts and taking my hard-earnt income. I would certainly be grateful if someone may give me some suggestions on my website: what is lacking and what things you would improve. Thanks in advance
